Meet Margie Hamner

Margie Hamner is an experienced and respected human resource professional, trainer and leadership coach with over 25 years of experience in private and public sector organizations. She specializes in assisting local government agencies and utilities to develop their current and future leaders. Her most recent position, before starting her own consulting business, was as the Human Resources and Organizational Development Manager for the Prince William County Service Authority where she created and managed the coaching and training programs.

The Starfish Story
An old man was walking on the beach one morning after a storm and noticed hundreds of starfish scattered along the shore. In the distance he could see someone picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. As he came closer, he saw that it was a woman picking up starfish and gently throwing them into the ocean. “Ma’am why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” The sun is coming up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die,” she said cheerfully. But there must be hundreds of starfish on this beach. You cannot possibly make a difference.” The woman listened politely, then bent down and picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “I made a difference for that one,” she said with a smile.
